Position Title: Organist
The Anglican Cathedral of St. Martin
Gander, NL

Position Summary: Utilizing both traditional and contemporary music, to lead the congregation’s musical worship during the various liturgies held at the Cathedral.


Responsibilities:
1. To play at regularly scheduled Sunday worship; 10:30 a.m. Holy Eucharist or Matins services, except when the Praise Band is scheduled or invited to play, and 7:00 p.m. services of Evensong, except in July and August. Also, to play any additional worship services as directed by the Rector, i.e. Lenten mid-week worship, Christmas Eve, etc. Any holiday time can be negotiated with the Rector.

2. To provide prelude music 10 minutes before worship begins.

3. If available, and if necessary, to provide music for funerals and weddings. Fees for such services are established in current parish policies.

4. In consultation with the Clergy and the Choir Director, to choose hymns for Sunday worship.

5. Accompanying regular practices of the Cathedral Choir. Also, accompanying any additional practices necessary when preparing for major church festivals/events, i.e., Christmas and Easter, etc. In consultation with the Choir Director, practice for Advent and Christmas should begin in October and practice for Lent/Easter should begin in January.

6. To provide a substitute organist, or to give notice, if unavailable.

7. To assist Clergy, the Choir Director and the congregation in sustaining an
effective Cathedral Choir by understanding and accepting the values of our mission statement.

8. To notify the Rector or wardens of any maintenance issues with the Pipe organ

9. To understand and comply with copyright laws.


Qualifications:
1. A personal faith in Jesus Christ and a love of music and God’s people.
2. An active member of the Cathedral of St. Martin’s, or knowledge of Anglican liturgical traditions.
3. Musical training sufficient to provide a proficiency in reading music and playing a pipe organ. Experience would be an asset.
4. A sense of teamwork; a willingness and ability to work with others.
5. A basic knowledge of traditional Anglican and contemporary Christian music.
